DHL and Huawei are integrating NB IoT chipsets for their solutions, which use common cellular telecommunications frequency bands such as LTE, to achieve simple and cost-effective implementation. The vehicle detector is embedded in these chipsets without any infrastructure investment. In addition, data is transmitted using existing public base stations, which have been upgraded to support NB IoT. Within each dock, DHL Supply Chain is now able to automatically collect clear dock availability in real-time, providing visibility for dispatchers and drivers. When a truck arrives, its driver registers through an application on his phone, receives a queue number and estimated waiting time. Then, the yard management system will automatically filter the availability of the dock and provide real-time status updates to each driver through the application. Once the dock is idle, the driver will be notified to continue accordingly. Through this method, inbound trucks can be prioritized according to the needs of the manufacturing site and unloaded at the most suitable port. It reduces the average waiting time of drivers by half from 40 minutes, and with timely arrival of materials and appropriate optimization of resources, the risk of manufacturing delays is significantly reduced.

"By 2025, the Internet of Things has the potential to bring up to 1.77 trillion euros in added value to the international logistics industry. We hope to work with Huawei on this path to develop cellular based IoT technology that can connect multiple devices over long distances. Our goal is to achieve a more integrated logistics value chain and enhance customer experience through greater connectivity," added Dr. Markus Voss, DHL Supply Chain Information and Operations Officer.

The concept validation of DHL will continue until the end of September and is expected to be enhanced through additional features such as automatic license plate recognition and geofencing. It marks another milestone in DHL's series of strategic IoT projects, such as the launch of IoT cockpits in smart warehouses in Europe and pilot projects in Asia.
